So you are working on photography. Excellent choice. Here is the link to the LearnAlberta site we are working from.

Learn Alberta - Intro to Photography

One great thing about digital photography is that you can experiment and see your results instantly. So experiment! Try things and take some chances. That's what learning is all about. Only your best work will be marked, but keep a folder of all your photographs in case you want to come back to them.

Go through each of the units and complete the associated assignment. Also, here are some YouTube tutorials that will help you with your assignments. Please watch the videos associated with each unit.

Most of these tutorials are using a DSLR camera. Most point and shoot cameras can be used in manual mode, it is just a little bit tricker to change. At the end of this course, you should feel quite comfortable using a DSLR camera in manual mode. Congratulations!

One more thing, please submit all your assignments via email to cristy.duce@westwind.ab.ca. Put your photographs into a Powerpoint or Keynote, explain which part of the assignment they are fulfilling (e.g. 1 Image showing motion. Subject 2) and include the details from your log sheet (e.g. Shutter Speed 1/4, f-stop (or aperture) 3.6, ISO 400). For the first few assignments, you can get this information off of iPhoto, but by Lesson 3, you should be changing settings and recording the information as you take your photographs.

Introduction - Lesson 1

Go through the material on the Learn Alberta site first.

Just to recap, please look over this site. It is very helpful to succinctly review what you have just learned.

Lesson 2

Lesson 2 is more about understanding composition and the rule of thirds.

Composing with the Rule of Thirds

Lesson 3

Lesson 3 is all about using light. You may need to review the tutorials on exposure to make sure you have the control in manual or priority mode to manipulate the amount of light in your photographs. Your use of light will be very apparent because you will be shooting in black and white. Make sure you keep your Photo Log as you go. That will allow you to see how your changes affect the image you produce.

Here is a video on using light:

Seeing the Light (this guy is kind of snotty, but he gives some good tips and examples)

Lesson 4

There is a "kit" lens that is already on the camera. There is also another lens.

To play with lens choice, you need to understand Focal Length as well as to understand what the numbers of lenses mean.
